Last Tuesday, Mike and Linda from the Upstate Homeless Coalition of South Carolina came to speak to our senior seminar class about how we could help their organization. Along with giving us very important information, Mike talked about a point that really stuck out in my mind. He explained that children who are homeless suffer in more than one way. Besides not having a warm place to sleep at night, they also may suffer in school as well.
If a young student is never given the opportunity to visit a zoo or have an abundance of books at his or her house, they may never learn what a giraffe is. If a student doesn’t know what a giraffe is and the teacher relates the letter G to a giraffe, the student will be lost. It opened my eyes and made me realize that being homeless can effect other parts of people’s lives.
Also, Linda mentioned a fundraiser that the UHC holds every year: The Bridesmaids Ball. The Bridesmaid Ball is on February 27 from 7 pm to 11 pm at the Greenville Marriott. There is a “Bridesmaids Dress from Hell” contest and the contestant wins $400 from Gregory Ellenburg.
